The South Carolina State Historical Records Advisory Board (SC SHRAB) is now taking applications for its 3-day Archival Institute slated for October 7-9, 2009, at the South Carolina Archives and History Center in Columbia.

Application deadline is August 14.  The application is available online at http://www.state.sc.us/scdah/shrab/2009AI.htm   Participation in the institute is limited and the application process will be competitive.

Participation is also free of charge.  All instruction, mileage, hotel and food expenses for accepted applicants will be covered by funding from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), the grant-making branch of the National Archives.

The South Carolina Archival Institute will address basic archival practices and standards, or “Archives 101” skills for individuals who work with archival collections in South Carolina.  It is intended for two audiences—archivists who have never received formal training, and archivists who want a refresher course in basic skills.

According to Roy H. Tryon, state coordinator for SHRAB, the need for the institute was identified at a planning conference of South Carolina archivists.  “It is hard to find funds for workplace training and education in this economy, so we hope a lot of archivists will want to take advantage of this opportunity,” he says.  “It has been almost 15 years since a similar institute was held.”

He adds, “The institute aims to reinvigorate people working in archives and help them develop new insights into problem solving in an era of limited money and rapidly growing collections.  It is also intended to raise the basic skill level of archivists in a state abundant in archival collections, but chronically short on funds to care for them.”

The institute will use lectures and hands-on activities to study arrangement, description, preservation, policies and procedures, disaster planning, exhibits, and services to patrons.  Instructors will include some of South Carolina’s most experienced archivists and archives educators, including Sharon Bennett, Harlan Greene, Marie Ferrara, Heather South and Jeanette Bergeron.
